[!TLDR] Chatbase Hobby is $40/month. FastBots Essential is $39/month. SiteGPT Starter is $39/month. Botpress Plus is $89/month. Below $25/month with real RAG (not a rule-based bot, not a Custom GPT, not a fake "AI" that's just keyword matching), the only serious options in 2026 are saavos Starter at $19/month and Botsonic Starter at $19/month annual. They're the same price. The model is different. That's the comparison. All pricing confirmed from vendor pages, 2026-05-19.
Chatbase moved their Hobby tier to $40/month in 2026. Before that, $20 got you a real RAG chatbot with decent training sources.
That shift matters because the $25-and-under band is where most indie SaaS founders are shopping. Not $100/month. Not $49/month. The tier where if the chatbot doesn't work out, you haven't burned two months of runway testing a theory.
The market changed. This post is the updated map.
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. It's the architecture underneath almost every custom-trained chatbot SaaS in 2026. You give the system your content (URLs, PDFs, text); the system chunks it, embeds it into a vector database, and at query time retrieves the most relevant chunks before generating an answer.
The bot doesn't "know" your content the way a human who read it would know it. It searches your content at the moment the visitor asks a question, grabs the 3-5 most relevant passages, and uses those to write a response. The citations come from that retrieval step.
Why does this matter for the $25-and-under comparison? Because "AI chatbot" in 2026 is not a single thing. Some products in this price range are rule-based decision trees with a thin AI skin. Some are Custom GPT wrappers that require visitors to have ChatGPT accounts. Some are genuine RAG pipelines with vector search and live content retrieval.
The ones that work for SaaS support deflection are the last category.
Here's the full list of RAG chatbot platforms that price their first paid tier at or under $25/month, with verified current pricing:
| Product | Entry paid tier | Monthly price | Messages/month | AI model | Free tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| saavos | Starter | $19/month | 1,000 | Claude Sonnet 4.6 | Yes — permanent, 50 msg/mo |
| Botsonic | Starter | $19/month (annual only) | 1,000 | GPT-4o mini | No — 7-day trial |
That's the list. Two products. One price.
FastBots used to be here. They raised their Essential tier from $19 to $39 in May 2026. Chatbase's Hobby tier is $40/month monthly ($32/month if you commit annually, which puts it above the $25 threshold on a monthly-billed basis). SiteGPT's Starter is $39/month with a 7-day trial but no permanent free option. Botpress Plus is $89/month. Tidio's AI features start at $39/month for only 100 Lyro conversations.

$19/month for 1,000 messages. That's where they meet. After that:
The model. Botsonic Starter runs GPT-4o mini. saavos Starter runs Claude Sonnet 4.6. GPT-4o mini is OpenAI's cost-optimized lightweight model — fine for high-volume FAQ with short, predictable answers. Claude Sonnet sits closer to Anthropic's flagship reasoning models. For SaaS support chatbots fielding nuanced questions — "does your API support webhooks?", "what happens to my data if I cancel?" — the model choice shows up in answer quality on edge cases.
The free tier. Botsonic's 7-day trial disappears. saavos's free tier is permanent: 50 messages/month, no card, no expiry. If you want to test on your actual docs before committing, that distinction matters. Seven days is tight. A permanent free tier lets you run the bot on your real pricing page and check the logs after two weeks before you spend anything.
Agentic actions. Botsonic Starter includes 3 "Agentic Actions" — tool-use integrations that allow the bot to call external APIs during a conversation. saavos doesn't have this yet. If your chatbot needs to look up live order status or pull from an external data source during a conversation, Botsonic's entry tier covers that and saavos doesn't.
Multi-channel. Both are website-only at this tier. No WhatsApp, no Instagram from either at $19/month. For multi-channel you're looking at FastBots ($39/month) or Chatbase Standard ($120/month).
Annual lock. Botsonic's $19/month is annual billing only — $228 upfront, effectively. saavos Starter is month-to-month at $19. If you're not sure you'll still be using the tool in 6 months, that's a real difference.
Both products use essentially the same architecture under the hood:
text-embedding-3-small model for this step — it costs fractions of a cent per page and is fast. The quality difference between platforms at this tier shows up at steps 1 (crawl completeness), 3 (retrieval threshold tuning — whether the bot falls back or hallucinates when retrieval is weak), and 4 (which model is doing the generation).
Specific scenario: you're a SaaS founder, sub-$5k MRR, and you're answering the same 8 questions from visitors every week. "What's included in the free tier?" "Does this work with Webflow?" "Can I have two bots?" "What happens when I hit the message limit?" You know these questions because you've answered them in your own inbox dozens of times.
A RAG chatbot trained on your pricing page and FAQ page deflects those. The bot doesn't need to be smart — it needs to be accurate on the 80% of questions that are already answered on your site. That's exactly what a well-configured RAG pipeline does.
At $19/month, a chatbot pays for itself if it deflects 2-3 support emails per month that would have taken 10 minutes each at a $60/hour time valuation. Most founders hit that break-even in the first week.
The case for staying in this tier rather than jumping to $39-$49/month options: you don't need live agent handoff, multi-channel deployment, Notion integration, or GPT-5 access for this job. Those are real features. They're just not what you need for FAQ deflection on a website under 1,000 monthly visitors.
Three situations where you'll outgrow the $19-$25 tier fast:
Volume. saavos and Botsonic both cap at 1,000 messages/month at this tier. A site with 2,000+ monthly visitors and a 15% chatbot engagement rate generates around 300-400 chatbot sessions — each session being 3-5 messages. You'll hit 1,000 messages around 700-800 monthly visitors with normal engagement. SiteGPT Starter at $39/month gives 4,000 messages for the extra $20, which is better value at this volume.
Training source breadth. If your docs are in Notion, Google Docs, or YouTube, neither option at $19/month crawls those natively. Chatbase ($32-$40/month) does. FastBots ($39/month) handles Notion and broader file types.
Multi-bot setups. saavos Starter includes 2 bots. Botsonic Starter includes 1. If you need a separate bot for your docs site vs your marketing site, saavos's 2-bot Starter is the only option under $25 that covers this.
Pick saavos if: you want Claude Sonnet from the entry tier, a permanent free tier to test before committing, and 2 bots for $19/month with month-to-month billing. If you're pre-revenue or under $1k MRR and not ready to commit to an annual contract, this is the only option that doesn't require one.
Pick Botsonic if: Agentic Actions are a real requirement right now — you want the bot to call an API or fetch live data during conversations — and you're comfortable committing annually at $19/month. Botsonic's tool-use at the entry tier is a genuine feature gap saavos doesn't close until a later roadmap phase.
Both train on URLs and PDFs. Both deploy via a script tag. Both show conversation logs. The model and the free-tier structure are where they actually differ.
I built saavos. I'm not a neutral party on this comparison.
What I can say: I watch the competitor pricing pages weekly, and the $25-and-under band has gotten shorter, not longer, this year. FastBots raised prices in May. Chatbase's entry tier has been $40/month since early 2026. The founders I talk to are surprised by this — they remember when Chatbase was $19/month and FastBots was $16/month.
The market moved. This is the honest map of what's left in the band.

Yes. As of May 2026, two platforms offer genuine RAG chatbots under $25/month: saavos Starter at $19/month (Claude Sonnet 4.6, 1,000 messages/month, permanent free tier, month-to-month billing) and Botsonic Starter at $19/month (GPT-4o mini, 1,000 messages/month, annual billing only). FastBots Essential is $39/month, Chatbase Hobby is $40/month monthly, SiteGPT Starter is $39/month, and Botpress Plus is $89/month. Pricing confirmed from vendor pages, 2026-05-19.
saavos and Botsonic are tied at $19/month for the cheapest RAG chatbot SaaS entry tier in 2026. Both include 1,000 messages/month and train on URLs and PDFs. saavos runs Claude Sonnet 4.6 with a permanent free tier and month-to-month billing. Botsonic runs GPT-4o mini and requires annual billing with no permanent free tier. FastBots, Chatbase, and SiteGPT all start at $39–$40/month at their current entry paid tiers. Pricing verified 2026-05-19.
Yes. saavos Starter ($19/month) and Botsonic Starter ($19/month annual) both train on website URLs using a crawl-and-embed pipeline. You paste a URL, the system crawls your pages, chunks the content, and embeds it into a vector database. At query time, your content is retrieved to answer visitor questions with citations. saavos also has a permanent free tier (50 messages/month, no card) to test on your real URL before paying. Pricing confirmed 2026-05-19.
saavos Starter at $19/month runs Claude Sonnet 4.6 on every paid conversation by default. Botsonic Starter ($19/month annual) runs GPT-4o mini, not Claude. Chatbase offers Claude as a selectable model starting at $32/month annual ($40/month monthly), above the $25 threshold. No other chatbot SaaS in the RAG category currently ships Claude Sonnet as the default model under $25/month. Pricing confirmed from vendor pages, 2026-05-19.
Yes. saavos Starter at $19/month includes 2 bots. Botsonic Starter at $19/month includes only 1 bot. At $19/month, saavos is the only option with multi-bot support under the $25 threshold. The next tier on Botsonic for additional bots requires the $49/month Professional plan. Pricing confirmed from saavos.com/pricing and botsonic.com/pricing, 2026-05-19.
